During the 1990s, Blacks outpaced Whites and the general population in
growth of Educational Attainment and Household Income. While median household
income for African Americans was still just 72% of the US median, it increased 28% over
the decade of the 90s. And Blacks are rapidly closing the gap in terms of educational
attainment. Seventy-eight percent of those age 25 and older in 2000 were high school
graduates (86% of those age 25-29), and 16% had college degrees (18% of those age 25-29).
The percentage of high school graduates more than doubled since 1970and college
graduates more than tripled!
The Black population increased by
4.7 million between 1990 and 2000 (15.6%), exceeding the growth rate of the
general population (13.2%). More than half (55%) of African Americans continue to live in
the South, where that population grew at a faster rate (23%) than either the West,
Northeast or Midwest during the decade. |
