During the twenty years ending in 2003 Average Household Income grew
thirty-three percent (33%), adjusted to current dollars. Income peaked in 1999, was
unchanged in 2000, declined over the next 2 years, and was unchanged in 2003 (see graph
below). Recessions in 1991 and 2001 briefly curtailed the steady rise. |
|
| |
What are the primary factors responsible for the dramatic growth in average
household income? While Nonfamily Households (unrelated people only) increased their share
of total households over the period by five percent, they now earn less than half the
income of Family Households (related family members plus any unrelated people). The rise
of income in family households more than compensated for the increased number of nonfamily
households. In addition, the top one-fifth of income earners in the U.S. has increased its
share of aggregate income to over 50 percent, resulting in steady upward pressure on the
average. |
